What is a sports jacket or sport coat
A sport coat is a short formal jacket that has a lot in common with a suit jacket, but is usually worn without matching trousers. The cut is also slightly looser. That makes it combine excellently with a jumper, chinos or jeans. Sport coats are often called blazers, but technically that is not correct. A blazer is the sportier jacket, with patches, patch pockets, eye-catching buttons and skirts: the pieces of fabric that hang loose at the bottom of the jacket.
The history of the sport coat
Although the Dutch word "colbert" sounds French, its use is entirely Dutch. The garment may be named after the seventeenth-century French minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert, but there is no hard evidence for this. Since the second half of the nineteenth century the sport coat has been a fixture of street life, although it was still considered informal then. In the twentieth century its popularity grew and it became common for smart occasions. Because fashion became ever more informal from the 1960s, the sport coat ended up on the formal side of the spectrum: it has not become tighter, everything else has become looser. Today we associate it with office work, politicians and official events. You will not get away with it at a gala; choose a tailcoat suit or tuxedo then.
