Stretch Dress Shirts: The Secret to Comfort and Style

A stretch shirt gets its give from a blend of cotton and a synthetic fibre, usually elastane. You'll also come across that fibre under the names spandex, Lycra or simply stretch.

Benefits of a stretch shirt

Elastane is so elastic that a small percentage is enough: a few percent in the cotton makes the difference between a shirt that pulls across the shoulders and one that moves with you. Stretch cotton can also take more tension than regular cotton, so it tears less easily. It's no coincidence that many slim fit and super slim fit shirts are made from stretch cotton: the closer the fit, the more you need that give.

Stretch cotton has advantages in the wash too. It shrinks less easily and creases less than pure cotton, although you still shouldn't wash it too hot; stretch cotton can shrink as well. One caveat: because elastane is a synthetic material, a stretch shirt isn't a natural product, and a blended fabric is harder to recycle than cotton alone. On the other hand, the shirt keeps its shape for longer and therefore lasts longer.
